The University of Namibia campus was built in the early 1970’s as the Windhoek College of Education. Consistent with approaches from that era, the layout follows a rather rigid linear pattern along an elevated pedestrian spine and the architectural expression of massive concrete and face brick blocks recall the Brutalist campuses of the post-1968 era.

Following Independence and the conversion to the national university some 20 years later, a re-development master plan was adopted to guide future building interventions away from the “institutional” character, towards creation of a more open and “democratic” environment.

The “Guide Plan for Physical Development 2000-2005”, which was prepared over a two year period by this team of architects, laid down flexible guidelines for expansion, including inter alia:

to consolidate and utilise existing wasted space by way of lateral expansion, in order to create a more legible and a more compact campus layout.
in the process to create outdoor spaces with distinct individual character as opposed to the confusing homogeneous mass of the existing campus
