Practice

Picture1.jpg

Established by Nina Maritz in 1998 and consistently pursuing sustainability in architecture, the company now celebrates its 21st anniversary, having produced a body of work that has stood out in Namibia since its inception.

As a Global Award for Sustainable Architecture laureate in 2018, Nina Maritz is an internationally acclaimed architect. Her sustainable and locally relevant approach has had a considerable impact in Namibia and internationally.

Though Nina Maritz Architects is a medium-scale firm, extensive previous experience of large-scale projects and successful collaborations with others have enabled the completion of very large projects and exposure to other approaches. The company has created a wide range of sizes and types of building, mostly within Namibia, but also in Angola, South-Africa, Kenya and China.

Nina Maritz Architects’ philosophy is that the architect’s responsibility to society and the environment informs their specific duty to clients. Architecture can only be complete when it works well – true beauty comes from a combination of the functional, the aesthetic and the sustainable

The practice focuses on how buildings - and people - relate to their surrounding environment. Buildings are designed not only to be green, but integrate harmoniously with the local culture.

Appropriate approaches in a country like Namibia entail careful use of available funds to achieve as much as possible without wasting resources. Lateral thinking and thorough reiterative design is used to make the most of limited budgets and skills.

Urban design and integrated social housing is a natural extension of Nina Maritz Architects’ interest in social and natural environments, the practice is involved in several urban initiatives.

As the relationship between buildings and their context, in terms of both the physical landscape and the socio-cultural environment, become far more evident on a larger scale.

Considering Namibia’s socio-economic context, Nina Maritz Architects creatively engages in appropriate community development. Expertise in participative design and alternative construction has been extremely valuable in rural projects using local materials and skills.

Suitable indigenous landscape design based on extensive knowledge and research on Namibia’s natural environment complements the architecture and creates bio-diverse habitats.

Nina Maritz Architects aims to not only try to satisfy client wish-lists, but also by careful research and analysis ensure that client needs are not overlooked.

We create buildings and places with meaning, not only to contain activities, but also to express their time and place. This leads to serene and beneficial environments which enhance people’s daily lives and where they can feel comfortable and creative. Through this, the practice wants to broaden people’s awareness of beauty, to have them experience their surroundings with heightened perception – and this includes a deeper appreciation of nature.

As Nina Maritz Architects see architecture as an integrated discipline of the environment, they employ art, science, psychology, engineering and multiple other tools to create spaces for life’s activities. It follows an inclusive approach, which mediates between individual and society, technology and nature, as well as the local and global, in order to be truly sustainable. This philosophy is not only applicable to ‘special’ projects, but to all buildings, regardless of function, size or cost.

Design Approach

What We Do

Working with multiple stakeholders in consultative processes to achieve creative, exciting and unique outcomes, we have completed a large variety of buildings. Considerable experience with the evaluation, design and implementation on a large range of project types and typologies gives us a wide range of efficacy, as shown in our portfolio.

We also actively participate and avail ourselves to discussions and evaluation of guidelines for policy in building design and implementation ranging from tourism to health in use by the Namibian government.

Our community development projects are well-known and apart from the standard architectural services include materials audits, skills development and training, and to some extent enterprise development.

Our familiarity with regulations as well as a flexible and responsive approach to authorities expedite planning permission processes. Experience with the several types of contract prevalent in Namibia as well as detailed knowledge of contracts law enable the successful completion of construction, minimising disputes.

Our projects are mainly in Namibia, although we have done work in South Africa, Kenya, Angola, Zimbabwe and China. Our multi-lingual design team are able to work in almost any country worldwide, though we prefer to collaborate with local professionals when working in other cultural and climatic contexts.

How We Work

As architects, our first priority is to develop an understanding of our client’s needs. A successful project results from a well-developed brief. Based on that, our dedicated design team will provide an innovative contemporary solution for you, whether a small extension, a large building complex or an urban or landscape design.

Working collaboratively with our clients adds true value to the design outcome. It takes time to craft good architecture in a reiterative process that provides options which will inform the client’s decisions. An efficient and close working relationship is thus essential.

The most expensive solutions are not necessarily the best ones and we pride ourselves on a frugal approach that aims to provide true value for money. Time, cost and quality are compared in an ongoing process for a result that targets the client’s individual requirements. The balance of capital expenditure versus operational costs and long-term impacts is carefully evaluated for the most sustainable solutions.

We work with a range of consulting professionals such as engineers and quantity surveyors to provide the client with a comprehensive bespoke professional service. As principal agents, we can coordinate the entire project from feasibility study and brief establishment through concept and design development, to technical

documentation, approvals and contract management. The result is the delivery of a good quality product that meets client aspirations, budget and deadlines.

Following occupancy, we remain in close touch with the users, to ensure full understanding of building systems and management, and resolve any unforeseen issues that might arise.
